Silva
e Souza, early historian of Goias, describes Corumba
as “ south of Meia-Ponte
is a small village with a big population in a farming
area which supplies the region with lard, tobacco and
cotton fabric. He also described the chapel of Nossa
Senhora de Penha. The census of the time included
“40 married and 450 single whites, 18 married
and 456 single negroes, 200 married and 796 single mulattos,
768 male slaves and 496 female slaves” (from the
Vida e Obra de Silva e Souza, by Jose Mendonca Teles;
Goiania, GO, 1978).
