Welcome
to the Ecological Guide for
Pirenopolis/Corumba. You´ll be able
to access ecological points of interest - ecopoitns
(including the area's main attractions, ecotourism
spots, rivers, waterfalls, landscapes, caverns, etc.).
Or opt to go first to Itinerary
areas, with mains cities and towns from where most
of the trails and tracks start. Linked to them you
have the Tips
area, with basic service infornmation in each one
of these places ( such as phone numbers, tourist reception
office, hotels, etc). In should also take a look at
the legally Preserved
Ares around - and visit them when possible as
in some national parks. And there are the sketch maps,
showing you how to go form one place to another. And
now with GPS
files, to take you where nobody else goes without
it and and 4x4 offroader. Visit our gallery of photographs
and short films.
The Ecological Guide of
Pirenopolis/Corumba will introduce you
to the central west region of the state of Goias,
covering the towns of Pirenopolis,
Corumba,
and Cocalzinho. Located between Brasilia and Goiania
in the region of the Central Planes and the Pirineus
mountain range, the source of the Corumba
River (heading south) and the Almas
River (heading north). This region of cerrado
vegetation, natural beauty, colonial architecture,
and many historical sites has its roots in the early
quest for gold in the 18th century. Pirenopolis is
a national monument situated at 800 meters above sea
level and is the main center for ecotourism in the
area (along with Corumba de Goias). Both towns were
founded by prospectors in the 18th century. Here you
can see large colonial houses, cobblestone streets,
churches and ruins of the Royal Road, as well as many
trails, waterfalls, rivers, springs and interesting
flora and fauna in the outlying mountains.
The third town covered in this section, Cocalzinho(
at the entrance of the Pireneus National Park) is
home to a large cement factory and has little of interest
- except for a few country inns and a complex of caverns
nearby (Ecos).
Pirenopolis is located 137 km from Brasilia, 89 km
from Anapolis
and 123 km from Goiania on paved roads. It has a good
infrastructure for tourism with many inns and hotels.
There are annual folk festivals such as the Cavalhadas
de Pirenopolis as well as religious festivals (Folia
do Divino). This Guide is organized around ecological
points of interest, and the area's preserves protected
by legislation. There are also photographs of environmental
problems as well such as large stone quarries that
for centuries have provided material for buildings
in the region. Consult our maps and GPS
archives (Global Positioning System) for orientation
regarding altitude, longitude and latitude.
