This
APA of 22,800 hectares encircles and protects the State
Park of Serra dos Pireneus, on the outskirts of Pirenopolis,
Corumba and
Cocalzinho. It contains the Pireneus Peak and the watershed
divisions for the Platina and Amazon basins and limits
the boundaries of the three towns. It also includes
Cabeludo hill and the sources of the Almas and Corumba
rivers.
Riparian
systems, high meadows, and well-preserved cerrado
vegetation, as well as other types of vegetation such
as Buriti palm groves and canopy forests characterize
these areas. Here you will find the rich beauty of
ornamental flora and fruit and medicinal trees such
as jacaranda, canela-de-ema, caraiba, ipe-do-cerrado,
and pau-papel (the state tree of Goias). Native fruit
trees include pequi, buriti, baru, xixa, mangaba and
cashew. Among the medicinal plants one finds sucupira-branca,
lobeira and arnica (considered endemic and an endangered
specie due to over harvesting.
Bird
lovers can see ema, siriema, aracaninde, papagaio-galego,
azulao do cerrado, mineirinho, and principe (the last
three being endemic and migratory). At least 165 species
of birds exist in the area.
Mammals
that appear in large numbers include macaco-prego,
guariba, veado mateiro and tamandua-bandeira (officially
listed as an endangered specie).
