Goiania,
the capital of Goais was built in the 1930's to replace
the old capital of Goias
Velho and to dismantle its political oligarchy.
With the creation of Brasilia
in 1960, Goiania experienced a construction boom that
transformed it into a city of over a million inhabitants.
Its once vast areas of forest have been reduced to a
few parks such as the Atenue Dom Bosco, Mutirana and
the recent ecological park of Ulysses
Guimaraes and the rivers passing through the cities
including the Meia Ponte have all become polluted.
