The
main eco-tourism sites in the Goias Velho region are
the Serra Dourado mountains (1050 meters elevation;
it's
rock
symbol was vandalized in the 1960's), the Biological
Preserve of the Federal University of Goias, the trail
near the
Estrada
Colonial, the
ruins
of Ferreiro/Ouro Fino, the
fountain
of Carioca ( circa 1752) , the
Poco
do Bispo, the waterfall and trail of
Andorinhas,
the rivers Bagagem and Bacalhau also with waterfalls,
hiking trails in the
foothills
(Cantagalo, etc.), and the town of
Areias
at the foot of the mountains.
The environmental problems of the area include indiscriminate
deforestation in the last several decades which has
lead to sedimentation of the local rivers and springs,
and pollution of the Rios Vermelho,
Manoel Gomes and Prata by the municipal sewer.
