Cantagalo
is one of the hills outside the city opposite the slopes
of
Serra
Dourado where rocks were mined for the pavement
of the old capital. The quarries continue mining flagstone
to this day. Several streams find their source on these
slopes flowing into the
Rio
Vermelho and the
Mandunzanzan.
The hill region of Cantagalo abounds with legends of
hidden gold, ghosts of slaves and other tales and is
an ideal hiking area with good trails.
