The
ancient town of the Xique-Xique of Igatu is the main
historical reference on the diamond cycle in the State
of Bahia, since the place survived the drive from
splendor in the XIX century to decadence in the XX
century, when most of the houses were left. Xique-Xique
of Igatu became for decades a phantom town.
Today it stands out for his ruins of houses from
stones, some reconstituted, giving a special air to
the village where diggings revealed bottles of medicines
for venereal diseases, probably used by the regular
visitors of famous nighthouses during the diamond
years, with imported delights to attend the miners.
The main attraction today is the small old town itself,
with its stone houses and streets paved with the same
material, stuck amid mountain ranges.
It is possible to arrive at Igatu going from Andaraí,
crossing the ancient road, driving seven kilometers
up on the hills, on an ancient stone paved road. You
can also go from Mucugê, taking BA-142 and then
geting out to a small non-paved road.
The small old town have very little infrastructure,
but you will certainly find shelter and food. From
Igatu some itineraries of ecotourism are organized,
as the tracks to the ruins and to Andaraí and
to Mucugê.
