Andaraí
is the second main city of Chapada Diamantina and
it is known for the colonial architecture - its houses
and mansions sheltered the barons of the diamond in
the age of splendor in XVIII Century. Natural sceneries
surround this lovely, quiet town. Its architecture
is protected by the Institute of the National Artistic
and Historical Patrimony. The word Andaraí
comes from the native words andira-e (river
of bat, in tupi-guarani), in a reference to the inhabitants
of the caverns in the mountains´ stonewalls.
The nice town can be accessed by the state highway
BA-142. From Andaraí you can reach ecopoints
of great natural appeal, such as the Enchanted Well.
In Andaraí there are organized ecotours, heading
to places like the Cavern of the Passion and the Marimbus
wetlands.
