One
of the most interesting falls in the Chapada, a trail
beginning in Lencois
takes you on a two hour hike (7 kilometers) along
the Ribeirao
Stream to Sossego Waterfall. There are several opportunities
for bathing and enjoying small falls along the way.
Be cautious though as you will need to do a lot of
rock hopping. When you finally arrive you will find
a large fall immersed in well-preserved vegetation.
First time visitors will find a guide indispensable
as unmarked junctions and a tricky path along some
sandstone formations can cause confusion as to where
the original miners trail is. Sometimes you can find
solitary miners camping along the stream beneath enormous
sandstone outcroppings such as Mrs. Chica and her
dog Bolinha. Some of them sell soda and mineral water.
You’ll notice that this area is outside the
National
Park boundaries but it is one of the best natural
monuments in the region.
