The Chapada Diamantina is a major eco-tourism
region for Brasil. Located in the interior of the state
of Bahia, it is 1,135 kilometers from Brasilia and 427
kilometers from the coast (Salvador). It can be accessed
from Highway BR242 but this road is sometimes poorly
maintained. Your main reference point is the CHAPADA
DIAMANTINA NATIONAL PARK, a conservation area overseen
by The National Environmental Agency (IBAMA).
Around the area of the park are historical villages
such as LENCOIS,
the principal tourist center with an airport and services
such as guides and hotels. Other villages in this region
include ANDARAI,
MUCUGE
and RIO
DE CONTAS lying beyond the colonial town of VILA
de IGATU,
with stone ruins and the smaller villages of Iraquara
and Palmeiras. They integrate our suggested itineraries
with points of interest and trailhead access to the
National Park.
Two other protected areas (APA’S)
adjoin the National Park, IRAGUARA/MARIMBUS
with hundreds of caverns and the State Park of Sempre-Viva
in Mucuge which preserves and studies the flora of the
region. For more details consult the section on Protected
Areas and environmental legislation.
Also, check out our PHOTO
gallery of the region, principal itineraries of trails
and detailed maps, and tips on local hotels, housing,
restaurants, snack bars, eco tour agencies, guides,
information centers and government agencies in each
micro region of the chapada.
We welcome your participation in compiling
additional information. Send
us your critiques, suggestions, corrections, photos,
itineraries etc. Help us to preserve the environment
and guarantee a clean economy for the local population.
